Contact This Professor

Dr. Norman Madarasz holds the position of Professor of Philosophy & Ethics and Head of the Academic Council at UGSM-Monarch Business School. He is currently Department Chair of the philosophy program at the Graduate School (Programa de pós-graduação em filosofia) of Universidade Gama Filho, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Professor Madarasz is an international specialist on twentieth century French philosophy, especially of the transdisciplinary thought of Alain Badiou, Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. He has edited and translated Alain Badiou’s Manifesto for Philosophy, New York State University Press, 1999, and Alain Badiou’s Briefings on Existence, with the same publisher in 2006. He has published over twenty essays and book chapters in peer-reviewed academic journals and publications over a broad range of questions related to ethics, politics, history, religion, metaphysics and logic. He has been an invited speaker at some of Brazil’s leading universities, and co-founded the Brazilian “Research Nucleus” on contemporary French philosophy.

After graduating in the Pure and Applied Sciences at Marianopolis College in Montreal, Canada, Professor Madarasz studied philosophy as an undergraduate at McGill University, where he graduated with honors in 1986. Interested in studying with the masters of continental philosophy, he went on to his graduate work at the Université de Paris 8 and Collège international de philosophie, where he was awarded the French Maîtrise, Diplôme d’études approfondies and Doctorat. The latter two were under the supervision of Alain Badiou, one of France’s most celebrated philosophers. After a sessional contract in Paris, Professor Madarasz was granted a foreign visiting scholar fellowship (“Bolsa Capes-PVE”) by the Brazilian Federal Government to be lecturer and researcher at Universidade Gama Filho for two years. In 2008, he became a full-time professor at the same university. In 2007, Professor Madarasz was a lecturer in the Law School of the Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ).

In the tradition of French philosophers, Professor Madarasz has always considered a philosopher’s job to include work as a public intellectual as well as a scholar. In 2001, he began drafting think pieces on North-South multicultural and pluri-religious topics for various web and print-based international publications. In addition, Professor Madarasz has worked intensively as a language and cultural consultant for some of the largest companies in France, where he lived for ten years, and in Brazil, where he has been based since 2001.

Professor Madarasz is nearing completion of his first book, a critical introduction to the philosophy of Alain Badiou in Portuguese, and is completing work on his study of the exclusion of faith in the context of philosophical materialism. He speaks three languages fluently, and is a passionate lover of music.
